The STP has been initiated in order to encourage the development and export of software. The scheme is administrated by the Ministry of Information Technology
And operated through the Directors of the STPs forming part of the STP of India. The STP scheme is an offshoot of the EOUs scheme and such as the units are given like facilities and work under similar procedural and policy dispensation as the EOUs.

STP Scheme :-

The scheme is a 100% EOU scheme for units undertaking the development of software for export using data communication link or in the form of physical export including export of professional services. The Exim policy provisions in respect of EOU apply to the STP and instead of the words 'Development Commissioner', the words chief executive of the STP Society will be read.
